She creates political, social, and military circles with amazing depth. Basically, if you can think of a magical fantasy creature, they probably exist in this world. Furthermore, she introduces a vast array of magical creatures, including Fae, angels, shifters, witches, vampires, mer-people, etc. Although Maas provides a map of Crescent City, the characters refer to places throughout Midgard to such an extent that I wished for a larger map. Next, the world building for Midgard is astounding. For example, I could not get enough of Ruhn and his friends Flynn and Declan. Each character develops a unique, flawed personality that had me wanting more story, despite the 799 page count. Additionally, I found myself caring for characters who are not even alive for most of the book. Although I was not initially a fan of Bryce at the start of the novel, I grew to love and root for her. Maas explores even minor characters in specific detail. However, that does not occur in this book. The emotional investment typically isn’t there. ProsĪ new series can sometimes suffer from the lack of background and history from the characters. They must work together to stop the evil that threatens their home, even if it means sacrificing their most precious secrets. However, as these two unlikely companions delve into the seedy underbelly of Crescent City, they find truths more deadly and horrifying than they bargained for. The only living angel who can summon lightning, Hunt also possesses additional lethal skills that make him the perfect demon hunter and bodyguard. Punished for his rebellion nearly two hundred years earlier, he finds himself on the brink of freedom if he can help Bryce solve these murders before the next Summit meeting. Meanwhile, Hunt Athalar lives as a slave to the Republic. Worse, she finds herself pulled into the investigation when the same brutal murders start occurring two years later. Everything changes when her roommate is viciously murdered.

Instead, she focuses on partying and living life to the fullest. Despite finding herself best friends with a powerful wolf shifter and her pack, Bryce struggles to find her place in society. Crescent City, although progressive by the standards of the world, still regards humans (and half-humans) as lesser than the more powerful Fae, shifters, malakim (angels) and others with magic.
